Brilliant boltholes for Bond baddies

Steppingstone Cheshire

Blofeld lived in a Swiss eyrie, Scaramanga on a tropical island and Drax in a space station: Bond might get the girls, but Bond villains get all the glamorous locations.

What makes the perfect Bond lair? Ian Fleming named one of his most toxic villains after his neighbour and modernist architect Ernö Goldinger and modern architecture has always been the style most associated with Bond baddies. Fortresses are good, too; volcanoes even better.

Obviously, a Bond villain's bolthole has to be very private and, as it generally doubles as a command centre, it must be spacious and packed with all the latest technology. Other must-haves include a helipad for a quick getaway, an indoor swimming pool (with or without the piranhas), and a large dining room (with or without ejector seats) in which the villain can address his evil henchmen.

We think the following properties would all make perfect bases for Bond baddies or, given that that 007's ancestral home was destroyed in Skyfall, maybe even a glamorous hideaway for Bond himself
