Walled gardens have existed in country homes and estates for centuries, with the traditional four-quarter design and central pool still commonplace in many of today’s most famous examples.
The distinctive enclosing brick walls were originally built to protect the garden from intruders – not just animals, but trespassers, too. As many were used as kitchen gardens the walls also provided vital shelter from the elements, creating a microclimate in which to grow fruit and vegetables.
Today, these walled spaces have been put to a variety of uses. While some retain their original design, others have been turned into allotments or swimming pools. Some walled gardens even have separate houses built upon them.
