Love London: St John's Wood in a day

St John's Wood in a day

St John’s Wood has a busy, village atmosphere with excellent shopping, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and Lord’s Cricket ground all on the doorstep. It’s also famously home to Abbey Road Studios and the zebra crossing on the cover of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album. Here’s how to spend a day exploring the area.

9am

Arrive at St John’s Wood station (Jubilee line), turn right and it’s a short walk to Gail's Artisan Bakery on Circus Road for breakfast. Extremely popular with St John’s Wood locals, the café serves good coffee and a delicious selection of freshly baked breads and pastries. Sit back, enjoy breakfast and plan your day.

10.30am

Time to walk off breakfast with a stroll along the picturesque canal, past the colourful and compact barges to Little Venice, maybe stopping off at London's oldest garden centre Clifton Nurseries, for some gardening tips, or for a cup of coffee at Baker and Spice, in the heart of Maida Vale. If dog walking or more exercise is required, Paddington Rec’s beautiful 27 acres are the ideal place for letting off steam.

1pm

Ready for lunch? There are plenty of choices. We recommend Saharah, an authentic Lebanese restaurant serving delicious, traditional recipes and there’s always a friendly welcome from the staff. It’s perfect for a three-course lunch or light snack, and if it’s a fine day there’s outdoor seating, so you can watch the world go by and get a feel for the neighbourhood.

After lunch, there’s an opportunity for some retail therapy, if required. The High Street is great for local shopping, with boutiques, interior designers, specialist food shops and independent retailers.

3pm

A walk and some fresh air in Regent’s Park's green, open spaces. Designed in the 18th century by John Nash, the park covers 395 acres and features to look out for include Queen Mary’s Gardens, with more than 30,000 roses of 400 varieties, and the gloriously restored William Andrews Nestfield’s Avenue Gardens. The park is also home to the largest outdoor sports area in central London, an outdoor theatre (summer months only), London Zoo and Primrose Hill for the amazing views across the city (firework night is an annual treat).

5pm

Time for some culture in Primrose Hill at the recently opened Beside the Wave Art Gallery (Chalcot Road), which displays contemporary works by artists inspired by the Cornish landscape. For literary enthusiasts, Primrose Hill Books is an independent seller of new and used books and regularly hosts talks by authors.

7pm

Dinner at Gilgamesh, an award-winning Pan-Asian restaurant in the heart of Camden that features sumptuous décor, a variety of bars and lounges and a retractable roof. We recommend the black cod and the sashimi.

After dinner how about some live entertainment? The Roundhouse in Camden is an iconic venue, hosting some of the biggest names in music and theatre, and proudly offering brilliant audience experiences every evening.
