Love London: Kensington in a day

Kensington in a day

Kensington combines a rich cultural heritage with a buzzing High Street, outstanding restaurants and bars, and beautiful green, open spaces. Here’s how to spend a day exploring the area.

9am

Arrive at High Street Kensington station (District line) and exit onto the high street, where you’ll find plenty of choices for breakfast. We recommend a short walk to Kensington Church Street to Le Petit Café. This cheery café serves delicious home-cooked food and is a nice, quiet spot in which to plan your day.

10.30am

A chance to walk off breakfast in Kensington Gardens, where you can also take a tour of Kensington Palace, view some art at The Serpentine Gallery, find the Peter Pan statue, or sit on a bench and watch the world go by.

12.30pm

Lunch at The Churchill Arms, back on Kensington Church Street, which claims to be London’s most famous watering hole. Built in 1750, the pub was once a favourite with Winston Churchill’s grandparents and today displays a fantastic collection of Churchill memorabilia. In the summer months it boasts an amazing display of hanging baskets and flowers. Enjoy a pint of top quality real ale and lunch in the Thai restaurant in the conservatory at the back, which offers excellent value.

3pm

If you're a retail enthusiast, the High Street will keep you occupied with most well-known brands and fashion retailers. Alternatively, walk down to South Kensington, taking in the architecture and blue plaques along the way, to London’s world-famous trio of museums: The V&A, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. Entry is free, apart from visiting exhibitions and events, and there’s always so much to see, time will fly by.

6pm

Back to the High Street for cocktails at Kensington Roof Gardens. Here you can enjoy the secluded atmosphere and amazing views across London’s skyline.

8pm

Stoll back down the High Street for dinner Kitchen W8, a Michelin-starred restaurant with a smart, but relaxed atmosphere (it’s advisable to book).

10pm

After dinner, it's time for some music and a nightcap at Bodo’s Schloss, an Alpine-style restaurant and bar, with lederhosen-clad staff and pine-panelled interior – you have arrived at Kensington’s hottest ‘off piste’ venue.
