Love London: East Sheen in a day

East Sheen in a day

East Sheen has everything on the doorstep: a busy high street with lots of independent retailers, an excellent choice of restaurants and cafés, quick links into London and best of all, the open spaces of Richmond Park. Here’s our guide to spending a day in the area.

9am

Arrive at Mortlake station (South West Trains) and turn right onto Sheen Lane, where a good place to start the day is Pickle and Rye, an American sandwich shop that prides itself on ‘bringing the real American sandwich to East Sheen’ – it’s a delicious alternative to cornflakes.

10am

Time to walk off breakfast. No visit to East Sheen would be complete without a trip to Richmond Park, with its 2,500 acres of deer inhabited parkland and ancient woodland. As well as open spaces and tranquil surroundings, the Park offers a host of activities, including cycling, horse riding, golf, rugby and fishing. Have a coffee at Pembroke Lodge (with great views across the River) or Roehampton Café before heading back to East Sheen.

1pm

Ready for lunch? The Robin Craft Café on Sheen Lane serves delicious authentic Thai and Vietnamese food alongside fantastic coffee and homemade cakes (with gluten-free options), all in a shabby chic setting.

3pm

Time for some shopping and/or browsing. The busy high street and Upper Richmond Road West has some excellent boutiques, home furnishings and specialist shops, we like Sheen Living for furniture, gifts and accessories; Butikken (‘The Shop’ in Danish) for hand-picked, Scandinavian homewares; and Tony Swatland – famed for his award-winning homemade sausages.

5pm

The Plough is a traditional 18th-century rustic inn on the edge of Richmond Park. Sit in the heated beer garden with a drink and watch the world go by – if it’s a bit chilly there are blankets on hand.

7pm

The Victoria is a good choice for dinner. This charming pub, restaurant and hotel serves 25 different wines by the glass, and a must-try on the menu is the pulled pork burger. The Victoria happily welcomes children and provides a separate play area to keep them occupied while you relax.

If you’d prefer Italian, there’s Valentina, an authentic deli and popular restaurant – we recommend the arancini.

9pm

After dinner, hop in a cab and take the short trip to Olympic Studios in Barnes, where the seating has been created with comfort in mind: reclining seats with footstools and sofas for those who want to cuddle up. You can also enjoy a glass of wine while you watch the film.
