Love London: Chelsea in a day

Chelsea in a day

Chelsea has long been one of London’s most fashionable locations, with world-class restaurants, designer fashion and independent boutiques, antiques, art, and heaps of history. Here’s how to spend a day exploring the area.

9am

Arrive at Sloane Square station (District and Circle line) and for a perfect way to start the day, head to The Good Life Eatery, for a healthy breakfast and maybe some celeb spotting, too – be sure to arrive early as the queues at peak times are nearly as famous as the customers.

10.30am

Time for a walk in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to the famous red-coated pensioners and the annual Flower Show. The building and architecture tell an interesting story and guided tours by the pensioners themselves take place every couple of weeks on varying themes. The highlight tour is a private viewing of the Crown Jewels with a glass of champagne – if it’s not too early.

1pm

After all that history, have lunch at The Ivy Chelsea Garden, a superb garden oasis, especially in the summer months, with a very British menu – think up-scale sausages & mash and a very decadent Eton Mess.

3pm

Time for some culture and a visit to the Saatchi Gallery in Duke of York Square. Charles Saatchi’s contemporary art gallery has become a major contender in the art world with previous exhibitors including Andy Warhol, Frank Auerbach and Lucien Freud. Alternatively, there are plenty of retail opportunities close by, with a good selection of well-known brands and international designers all on the doorstep.

5pm

Next, jump in a taxi to the 606 Club, in World's End, for some music and maybe a pre-dinner glass of something. Often cited as the best jazz club in London, the 606 Club has long been a popular venue for jazz lovers and music enthusiasts.

7pm

Dinner, and there’s no better place than Kurobuta for the tapas-style menu at this avant-garde, Izakaya-style Japanese restaurant. We recommend the soft shell crab and tuna sashimi truffle pizza.

9pm

Round off the day with a cocktail at The Bluebird – the place to see and be seen, and affectionately known by the regulars as the ‘gastrodrome’.
