Love London: Barnes in a day

Barnes in a day

Barnes is a small, but perfectly formed village, roughly six miles from the centre of London. Close to its leafy Green are some excellent independent shops and it's just a stone's throw from the river. Here’s our guide to spending a day in the area.

9am

Arrive at Barnes station (South West Trains) and walk five minutes to the centre of the village. Gail's Artisan Bakery, opposite the pond, is a great place to have breakfast and plan your day. It’s a popular spot with locals and offers everything from cinnamon buns (recommended) to blueberry pancakes, excellent coffee and fresh juices.

10.30am

Time for some exercise and a riverside walk. Take the Barnes towpath, opposite Barnes Bridge station, to Hammersmith Bridge and on to the Wetlands Centre where you can spend an hour or so enjoying the tranquility of this unique nature reserve.

1pm

Back to Barnes Village itself and lunch at The Sun Inn, opposite the pond. This newly refurbished pub has a friendly atmosphere that suits village life. The lunch menu includes tapas-style options, or if you’re feeling hungrier, try the West Country Beef Burger with Pulled Pork and fries. Wash down with a pint of Addlestones or a Kopperberg, and you’ll be set-up for the afternoon.

2.30pm

Time for some retail browsing and a chance to familiarise yourself with the independent specialist shops in the High Street: a cheese shop, fishmongers, greengrocers, Swedish shop and even a gentlemen’s boutique. If you’re in the mood for some art, The Riverside Gallery exhibits and sells original, contemporary paintings, sculpture and ceramics.

Or, if you’re feeling more energetic, how about a game of tennis at Barn Elms Sports Centre? Set in 52 acres, the Centre offers a multitude of sports facilities for both locals and visitors.

4pm

It must be time to visit Orange Pekoe, where teas from around the world accompany an award-winning afternoon tea.

5pm

Head to Canon Bar at The White Hart, bag a seat on the terrace or a bench by the river, and enjoy a glass of wine in the sunshine. Alternatively, there’s comfortable seating and a good atmosphere in the bar.

7pm

Dinner has to be at Sonny’s Kitchen, where two-star Michelin chef Phil Howard works closely with head chef James Holah to devise a perfectly balanced range of impeccably cooked, classic dishes. The atmosphere is one of elegance and exclusivity, with just the right amount of Barnes Village warmth and geniality.

9pm

After dinner, hop over the road to Olympic Studios in Barnes, where the seating has been created with comfort in mind: reclining seats with footstools and sofas for those who want to cuddle up. You can also enjoy a glass of wine while you watch the film.
