Sevenoaks in a day

Sevenoaks in a day

Sevenoaks is not just about the commuting convenience – it’s a traditional market town offering a great family lifestyle, fantastic schools and stunning countryside. It also makes for a fun day out. Here’s how to do it.

8am

For breakfast, or just a coffee, drop into family-run Malabar Coffee House, in the centre of town. There’s an outside seating area for fine days. Alternatively, try the cosy Italian-style Nonna Cappuccini’s in Blacks Yard.

10am

Pay a visit to enchanting Knole, one of Britain’s most impressive stately homes, surrounded by a medieval deer park (the entrance to the park is at the top of the High Street). The National Trust, which now runs the house, believes Knole was once a ‘calendar house’, with 365 rooms, 52 staircases, 12 entrances and seven courtyards (some of the staircases have been dismantled).

There are other gorgeous stateley homes in the area, such as Chartwell, the much-loved family home of Winston Churchill; Quebec House, residence of 18th-century soldier General James Wolfe; and the stunning Emmetts Garden, though these may have to wait for a return visit.

Chartwell

12pm

To experience a typically English market town, head towards the town centre for a good mix of independent and national retailers. Local boutiques Mousetrap, The Clever Dresser and Tommelise are worth a visit, and there are markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

1.30pm

Take a break from shopping and enjoy lunch at The Little Garden Restaurant in Well Court, The White Hart pub or Sun Do Restaurant, a local favourite 35 years.

3.30pm

What next? How about a leisurely afternoon on the green. Try Knole Park Golf Club or Wildernesse Club, just beyond Knole. Cricket and rugby are also firm fixtures for Sevenoaks; look out for matches at Sevenoaks Rugby Club or Sevenoaks Vine Cricket Club, one of the oldest cricket venues in England.

5pm

If a play or film is just the thing, then check out what’s on at the Stag Community Arts Centre, Cinema and Theatre. There are performances throughout the year, ranging from live musicals to movie screenings.

7.30pm

If you're not settling down to watch a film at Stag, then it's time to think about dinner. The Vine Restaurant, in Pound Lane, is the place for gourmet European cuisine, though if you fancy something more exotic, how about El Matador, a sophisticated Spanish-Argentinean restaurant and lounge in London Road?

The Chequers

9pm

There’s just time for a nightcap at one the town’s many welcoming pubs: the 16th-century Chequers on the High Street is always a good bet, or wind down at the cosy Black Boy (closed on Sundays in winter), with its crackling log fires and comfortable sofas.
