Cambridge in a day

Cambridge in a day

Cambridge really is a city of two halves. Cosmopolitan cool on the one hand, traditional and historic on the other. There is so much to see and do it’s hard not to fall in love. Here's how we recommend you spend the day.

9am

First stop is breakfast or brunch at the Espresso Library, a contemporary café in Parkside Place that captures the essence of Cambridge. The menu is original, sourcing local ingredients, the coffee is outstanding, and the ambiance effortless. Located in the former Cambridge Fire Station, the building signifies a new era of regeneration in the city.

10.30am

Depending on your pace, you can walk from Parkside Place to the city centre in around 10 minutes, taking the time to soak up the atmosphere. Alternatively, join one of the open-top bus tours for great views of the colleges and the city.

Look out for the Cambridge Corn Exchange and the Arts Theatre, between Corn Exchange Street and Bene’t Street – you may well find yourself returning here this evening. But for now, why not see what bargains you can pick up in the market in the main square?

Cambridge Views

1pm

This arty hub of Cambridge has a wonderful community feel and is also home to a new wave of independent restaurants and shops. If you are ready for lunch Pint Shop, Bread and Meat and Smokeworks are all highly recommended.

2pm

Refuelled, it's time to visit a college and King’s College and chapel are just nearby. If the sun is shining, head from King’s College to The Cam for a leisurely punting trip – some say it’s the only way to view the city. Alternatively, the Cambridge University Botanic Garden is a pleasant way to spend an hour or two or head west to the landmark Fitzwilliam Museum or the Arts Picture House cinema.

Cambridge Kings College

4pm

Time for tea and the Afternoon Tease on King Street is a great favourite – try the carrot cake with cream cheese icing. Or if you feel like heading further afield, the Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop is definitely worth a visit. Located in Shelford Bottom, the afternoon treats, deli, café and butchery are exceptional. The best way to get there? Bike of course. Hire one from City Cycle Hire in Newnham Road.

If you’ve still got some energy, hit the shops at the Grand Arcade. A regional honey pot for retail junkies, the Grand Arcade is home to leading brands, including John Lewis, and independent boutiques alike.

6pm

Wind down with a gin and tonic on the terrace at The Varsity Hotel roof top bar where the views across the city skyline are spectacular.

8pm

Cambridge has great dining options to round off your day. For many, the Michelin-starred Midsummer House is the best restaurant in the city. Alternatively, Cotto on East Road is always enjoyable, while The Riverbar Steakhouse and Grill offers a relaxed atmosphere with regionally sourced meat and a steak master class.
