Beaconsfield in a day

Beaconsfield in a day

Only 20 minutes from London by train, Beaconsfield is an eclectic mix of the old and new, ranging from the charm and sophistication of the Old Town to the vibrant café culture of the New Town. The best way to experience it is to come for the day and here’s how we’d recommend you spend it.

9am

Exit the M40 at Junction 2 to arrive in the historic Old Town. In London End, bag a parking space outside Brasserie Blanc where you can plan your day over a breakfast of Eggs Benedict, traditional French pastries, freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee.

10am

Meander past all the interior design shops along London End, including Knights of Beaconsfield, Oakeve Interiors, Farrow & Ball and John Lewis of Hungerford. Then why not pop into Beaconsfield Wine Cellars, an independent wine shop with a superb range, and pick up a bottle or two to stash in the boot of your car?

Continue walking until you reach the Tuesday market in Windsor End by St Mary & All Saints Church. This market is a firm favourite with locals, and has a selection of fruit and veg, artisan breads and antique trinkets.

11am

From the market stroll towards the bustling New Town and find yourself at the gates to Bekonscot Model Village & Railway. This is where Queen Mary took Princess Elizabeth on the eve of her eighth birthday.

Allow yourself to be transported back in time as you wander through the miniature village, town and seaside scenes complete with a model railway. The children can then work up an appetite in the playground.

12.30pm

Peckish? Then head back into the Old Town and grab a family-friendly pizza from either Zizzi in Aylesbury End or Pizza Express in London End.

2pm

Pick up the car and drive south via Broad Lane towards Wooburn Common and Odds Farm Park, where the whole family can spend a fun-filled afternoon petting and feeding farm animals, trying out the adventure play areas, taking a ride on the tractor, and maybe even indulging in some crazy golf.

4pm

Drop Mum off at the exclusive Mulberry’s day spa back in Beaconsfield while the rest of you head to Empire cinema in nearby Gerrards Cross to catch the latest blockbuster.

6.30pm

It's time to pick Mum up. Park at The Royal Saracens Head, a much loved 18th-century country pub, just around the corner from the spa. It has a great menu of fresh, seasonal produce and offers both indoor and outdoor dining. Can't decide on a pudding? Go for The House Sharer (£11.50) – vanilla crème brûlée, salted caramel chocolate pot, passion fruit tart and Glenown Farm vanilla ice cream cookie sandwich. A great end to a great day.
