Plans for a new arena for Scotland’s capital are approved

Plans for an 8,500-capacity music and entertainment arena in Scotland’s capital have been approved by Edinburgh City Council. The decision will enable the city to attract a host of prime live music and entertainment events currently lost to the city.

It is estimated that the new arena at Edinburgh Park will bring £520m per annum to the city, attracting over 700,000 visitors annually. The proposals were submitted by AEG Europe, the owner of London’s O2, advised by Savills Planning.

Adam Richardson of Savills Planning said: “We’re delighted that the purpose-built arena proposals have been approved. Once completed, the arena will provide the last piece of the cultural jigsaw in Edinburgh as well as being one of the greenest ever built. Located adjacent to existing tram and train stations, it will also include high energy efficiency in its design and on-site renewable generating technologies, all in line with the Scottish Government’s drive towards net zero. The contemporary aesthetic inspired by the Salisbury Crags at Arthur’s Seat further contributes to what will be a first-class facility.

“Today’s announcement reflects months of consultation and discussion with key stakeholders including the local community, prior to the application being submitted, and a positive ongoing dialogue with all parties throughout the application process.”
