In Focus: Haslemere

Haslemere is a pretty market town in the picturesque countryside of the Surrey Hills National Landscape – what used to be known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Surrey’s southernmost town, Haslemere’s charm lies in its beautiful buildings and vibrant atmosphere with a wealth of independent shops, restaurants and cafés.

Those buying in the area tend to be families seeking a relaxed town or village lifestyle with nature on the doorstep, excellent schools and an easy commute to London. Haslemere has a station, with four trains an hour to London and a journey time of about 50 minutes. Meanwhile, the A3 links to the capital and down to the south coast. It’s a popular place to live, as a number of our team, who call it home and have raised their families here, will testify.

Schools

In terms of education, there is lots of choice both primary and secondary, state and private, including St Bartholomew’s and Camelsdale primary schools, Woolmer Hill, Bohunt School, Highfield and Brookham, Churcher’s College, St Edmund’s School, St Ives and The Royal School.

Property and house prices

Properties within a 10 or 15 minute walk of the station are always in demand. Or for those wanting a more rural feel, there are numerous attractive villages within a 15 minute drive, such as Brook, Grayswood and Hindhead, in Surrey, as well as Lurgashall, Milland, Lickfold, Lynchmere and Fernhurst, over the border in West Sussex. Liphook, a large village lying on the Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex borders, is also sought after thanks in part to its trainline to London in around an hour and 15 minutes.

As far as values are concerned, for a good sized family home in Haslemere, you can expect to pay upwards of £750,000, with properties across a broad price range beyond this in the popular surrounding villages.

What to do in Haslemere

The area is blessed with plenty of family-friendly, foodie village pubs with great reputations, such as The Mill, on the outskirts of Haslemere, The Duke of Cumberland Arms in Henley, The Rising Sun in Milland, The Noah’s Ark in Lurgashall and The Deer’s Hut in Liphook, amongst others.

Often described as one of the gems of the Surrey Hills National Landscape, Haslemere is surrounded by glorious countryside. The Devil’s Punch Bowl is renowned for its spectacular views, while the South Downs National Park is nearby.

For golfers, two of the best courses in the country are close at hand, in Hindhead and Liphook, while there’s polo at Cowdray Park, and horseracing and motor racing at Goodwood.
