The grass is always greener... at home on St. Patrick's Day ☘️

Home is where the heart is 💚

This St. Patrick's Day we spoke to Irish expats who made the decision to return home and explored their reasons for doing so. If you are considering a return home, we have also included some available properties that may be of interest. Céad míle fáilte.

London to Cork ✈️

Why did you decide to move home?

While we spent over a decade living and working abroad, Cork was always home and we knew we would return to and raise a family here at some point. It has everything we want, beautiful countryside, great beaches, a vibrant city, a well connected airport for work travel. Most importantly we are now close to our families and our friends and you can't put a price on that.

What did you miss the most about home?

Initially it was mainly the people. To be perfectly honest, when we were younger, living outside of Ireland was exciting and we probably didn't miss home a huge amount! We loved being able to travel across Europe easily and enjoyed the new cities and cultures we found ourselves in. However, as we got older and had a child our priorities slowly shifted. We wanted that sense of security that being in Ireland and being at home gives us.

What are you enjoying the most about being back home?

We are most enjoying catching up with friends and family that we haven't seen enough of over the past 10 years. We also love things like watching our daughter pick up a hurley and sliotar after she had seen the older girl next door playing! For us, Ireland delivers family, friends and community, something that we just can't replicate elsewhere.

Auckland to Donegal ✈️

Why did you decide to move home?

To be closer to Mam and Dad in Kincasslagh, Co Donegal.

What did you miss the most about home?

Family get togethers such as christenings, weddings and 40th birthday parties.

What are you enjoying the most about being back home?

Integration back into Irish life and picking up where we left off with friends. I have started playing with the local GAA club again which is great, I was a decent minor footballer when I left.

Dubai to Drogheda ✈️

Why did you decide to move home?

We lived in Dubai for 11 years so we felt the time was right for our family to return back to Drogheda, with our two small children

What did you miss the most about home?

Help with our children from Granny and Grandad! And of course, our wide network of friends as well as some nice, cool summer weather (we are slowly adjusting).

What are you enjoying the most about being back home?

Preparing the boys for school in September and settling into our new home. We bought back in January, so we had plenty of time to settle them before the big jump into national school. The close-knit community we now live in is exactly the reason we made the move home and we don’t regret a thing, even when it's raining!
