6 of the best...Homes with coastal cachet

High-octane activity or quiet reverie?

However you like to be beside the seaside, with such a varied and extensive coastline there’s bound to be somewhere to fit the bill along these shores.

Coastal properties have an appeal all of their own, whether it’s the dramatic, ever-changing views, the promise of fresh sea air or the potential for water sports on tap.

I know of buyers who have lived by the sea then moved inland, only to hanker for the sights and sounds of the waves again. And according to Savills Research, houses within 100m of the coastline in England and Wales cost an average of £367,000, which is 22.6 per cent more than those located up to 1km further inland. Before the pandemic, these homes cost an average of £306,000, which represented a premium of only 18.1 per cent. The premium for front line positions with direct views of the water can often be considerably more.

Our gallery below heads to the coast and includes stops at a property with uninterrupted views from Portland Bill to the Cobb at Lyme Regis (top), a contemporary Norfolk estate, complete with private pontoon for kayaking and wild swimming and an Arts and Crafts house in Walberswick designed by renowned architect Frank Jennings.

So sit back, relax and enjoy this summer’s siren call of the sea.
