  • a middle/secondary school: ‘collège Charles III

History: The Monks who were teaching in the primary school in Monaco-Ville, were asked to open a second school in the Monte-Carlo quarter. That school opened in 1890 and settled in the shacks close to the Saint-Charles church. In 1913 a second floor was built as a response to the school needs and in 1953 the upper floor had an entrance on the boulevard de France in Beausoleil for the girl’s school managed by the Saint-Maur’s Dames.

In 1992, the princely government decides to rebuild the school and, in the meantime, the school was moved to Monaco-Ville.

The new school reopened in 1997.

  • a technical college: ‘lycée général et technologique’

- A Lycée ‘Albert 1er’

In 1906, the people of Monaco showed their desire for a school where the baccalaureate examinations could be prepared in the Principality. Prince Albert I, in 1910 decided to refurbish the former Convent of the Visitation, built in 1663.

The Prince Rainier III, during Monaco's modernizing era, extended the school building upwards.

Institution Fracois d'assise

Private Institutions:

 - L'Institution François d'Assise–Nicolas Barré

History : This school is a result of a fusion of two religious institutions led by a religious association. The Institution Saint Maur and the Collège Franciscain. In 1859 the Prince Charles III, asked three sisters from the Enfant Jésus Congregation of Sisters to settle in the Principality. In 1862, at Monaco-Ville the first primary school for girls was created. In 1883, after the Franciscan Monks were allowed back in Monaco, they created a seminar at the actual location of FANB’s Middle and High school in Roqueville. In 1953 the little seminar became a secondary education institution. The Association of the private catholic educational institutions of Monaco was created in 1992. The first decision it took was to put in common the rich History of the two Institutions and to create the Institution Saint François d’Assise - Nicolas Barré, named after the founder of the Franciscans (Saint François d’Assise) and the Saint-Maur institution (Nicolas Barré) It opened officially in 1993.

Monaco schools emphasise the importance of language tuition from an early age: English is taught from three years old, and Monagasque is taught in primary and secondary schools. The History of Monaco is taught to students in Monaco, along with Religious instruction upon parental approval.

The International School of Monaco teaches a bi-lingual English and French curriculum in the primary years, and an English IB curriculum in the secondary school. The Modelex Education Centre caters for students speaking English, French and Russian.

School is compulsory from the ages 6 – 16 years old, and a school week contains around 26 hours of academic instruction alongside 2-4 hours of physical exercise.

Applying to Schools in Monaco

In the public system, the school in which the student will be going depends on the geographical area they live in. An exemption can be requested to the authorities in order to attend a school that is not in the residency’s geographical area. Residency in Monaco is required and those who wish to enrol need to attest of that. There is a priority given to Monegasque children or those with at least one Monegasque parent.

Even though they have lesser priority, children of Monaco workers can also request from the authorities an authorisation to school their children in Monaco.

The application form and list of required documents can be found on the website of the Department of Education, Youth and Sport.
