The Great Outdoors: how active pursuits influence purchasing decisions

Active pursuits are becoming a major driver of holidays, particularly amongst younger generations, and are increasingly a factor in determining property purchases. Research from our Second Homes report* showed that sports and access to hiking or cycling trails are of at least some importance to more than 60 per cent of all owners surveyed, with over 40 per cent of owners citing fishing, golfing and adventure sports as being of importance in a future property purchase.

Many purpose-built resorts targeted at second home buyers incorporate a golf course. Access to golf remains an important feature to buyers and 44 per cent of owners said it would be a factor in a future purchase. Some nationalities value golf more than others, with a golf course deemed essential or very important by 23 per cent of Canadian owners and 21 per cent of American owners.

In fact, Canadians are the most active, with golf being their highest valued activity, followed by water and winter sports. Nearly a quarter of Americans consider access to fishing an important feature while Portuguese owners have a higher than average preference for adventure sports and tennis. The British, by contrast, place less value on active pursuits with just 10 per cent of owners citing proximity to them as important.

*In June 2019, Savills World Research surveyed 7,800 property owners who list their properties on HomeAway in 10 major markets (US, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, New Zealand and Brazil). A second survey was carried out of 6,800 renters who use HomeAway from the same 10 countries.
