Moving to the Côte d'Azur

Making a big move is always daunting yet exhilarating at the same time - adventure awaits and new opportunities abound. Life on the Côte d’Azur will not disappoint, as it is definitely action packed year round with sailing, celebrity, culture and cuisine all on the agenda.

Whilst multiple reasons are behind a move to the French Riviera the most often cited is the exceptional quality of life here, alongside the numerous working opportunities and the global interconnections available. Indeed, the region boasts the third busiest airport in France with new routes always opening, most recently an additional flight to New York and China. In addition extensive development (with equally impressive funding) tempts industry relocation, boost talent sourcing, eco credentials and tourism.

So life on the Côte d’Azur is definitely rosy (or rosé, well we are in France!) yet it can often be difficult to see that bigger picture when your head is full of potential mishaps and maybe’s. So how can you ensure your step into life on the French Riviera is as smooth and stress free as possible – learn from someone who has already done it!

The internet is full of hints and tips on moving abroad, from arranging visas to sorting your healthcare or local currency but what about on an everyday level? Many people choose to “trial” life in another country through long term travel, sabbaticals, office swaps or holiday rental. These are all excellent but what is truly invaluable is a local source, been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

To help you out, four expat colleagues from the Savills French Riviera team shared their experiences of moving to the Côte d’Azur (and the bumps along the way) and it is clear to see their passion for the area and way of life.

Read their stories below and gain an insight into this wonderful part of the world and just what is in store for you. Adventures await.

Name & role in Savills

Kati Mulligan, Marketing Director for the French Riviera & Alps.

When did you move to the Côte d’Azur?

I moved within Savills, from London to Nice in early 2015 after a stint of work experience during summer 2014, 5 years have flown by!

What was the reason for your move ?

My first trip abroad was to Paris and I firmly told my family that I was going to live in France when I grew up… 16 years later (via university, London and many attempts at learning French) serendipity and a brave move collided and I moved within Savills, from one great team to another.

What is your favourite thing about living on the Côte d’Azur?

It is always a surprise.

The area is stunningly beautiful yet if you can tear your eyes away from the back drop there is so much to see and learn that I am constantly surprised. Art, culture, medieval villages, sports, new foods, it is a real treat for the senses.

Hang-on, I forgot Gelato, can that be a joint favourite?

What is your favourite location on the Côte d’Azur and why?

Difficult question – there are too many. Villa Rothschild for the stunning setting and feisty heroine. Liberation market in Nice for always being full of amazing fresh goodies. Beaulieu as it is a beautiful beach and where I learnt to paddle board. And the Haut de Cagnes for being a dream like movie-esk set where you can drink wine and play petanque amidst the medieval houses.

What is your favourite property on the market at the moment and why?

I love clever design so this apartment in central Saint-Tropez really stole my heart with its intriguing features and roof terrace.

I am definite it will be snapped up in a heart beat so this charming house in St Jean is a very close second and I could definitely see myself entertaining family and friends here.

What do you wish people knew about the French Riviera ?

The French Riviera has a very glamorous image but the start-up talent and industry knowledge base of Sophia Antipolis is incredible and really draws big investment. There are big plans to expand the offerings and access so it is only going to continue drawing talent.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to move?

Take the plunge! Spend time in the area, rent to experience the lifestyle and explore locations to get to know what and where suits your lifestyle. Ask yourself what you want to gain from a move and focus on that.

What do you wish you had known before you moved ?

That I would become so obsessed with bread! Also not to get discouraged when learning a language, keep going and laugh when you make mistakes, errors help your learn.
