Moving to the Côte d'Azur

Making a big move is always daunting yet exhilarating at the same time - adventure awaits and new opportunities abound. Life on the Côte d’Azur will not disappoint, as it is definitely action packed year round with sailing, celebrity, culture and cuisine all on the agenda.

Whilst multiple reasons are behind a move to the French Riviera the most often cited is the exceptional quality of life here, alongside the numerous working opportunities and the global interconnections available. Indeed, the region boasts the third busiest airport in France with new routes always opening, most recently an additional flight to New York and China. In addition extensive development (with equally impressive funding) tempts industry relocation, boost talent sourcing, eco credentials and tourism.

So life on the Côte d’Azur is definitely rosy (or rosé, well we are in France!) yet it can often be difficult to see that bigger picture when your head is full of potential mishaps and maybe’s. So how can you ensure your step into life on the French Riviera is as smooth and stress free as possible – learn from someone who has already done it!

The internet is full of hints and tips on moving abroad, from arranging visas to sorting your healthcare or local currency but what about on an everyday level? Many people choose to “trial” life in another country through long term travel, sabbaticals, office swaps or holiday rental. These are all excellent but what is truly invaluable is a local source, been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

To help you out, four expat colleagues from the Savills French Riviera team shared their experiences of moving to the Côte d’Azur (and the bumps along the way) and it is clear to see their passion for the area and way of life.

Read their stories below and gain an insight into this wonderful part of the world and just what is in store for you. Adventures await.

Name & role in Savills

Alex Balkin, Executive Director for the French Riviera & Alps

When did you move to the Côte d’Azur?

In 1994, after 4 years in Paris

What was the reason for your move ?

The lawfirm I worked for at the time moved to Nice, to the great joy of my wife, whom I met in Nice actually. No, I didn’t need a lot of persuading...

What is your favourite thing about living on the Côte d’Azur?

The quality of life. The easy access to different places. Sun, snow, beaches, Italy around the corner. The ability to spend so much time outdoors. The colours and scents. Working with great people across the Riviera, making business and pleasure come together.

What is your favourite location on the Côte d’Azur and why?

My terrace while listening to the cicadas, watching the sky change hues. The seaview from the road going to Eze from Nice on my bike.

What is your favourite property on the market at the moment and why??

My favourite property is in Nice, strictly off-market, overlooking Cap Ferrat and the bay of Villefranche. A waterfront masterpiece of understated elegance.

In addition I think the Valbonne property featured below is exceptional and features landscaped grounds by Jean Mus

What do you wish people knew about the French Riviera ?

For instance, that Nice is such a great city, active all year round, with an ever-increasing number of restaurant offerings, a great theatre, a more than decent opera, and an urban environment which has recently been made even more pleasant by the creation of many new park areas. The city is becoming more and more cosmopolitan, and adding to that the climate and the airport within walking distance from the centre, what else would anybody need to make this the most obvious bolthole in Europe?

What advice would you give to anyone looking to move?

Come visit. Open your mind. Let the magic work. Learn French, immerse yourself..

What do you wish you had known before you moved ?

I would probably have moved here earlier!
