6 of the best...Classic townhouses

The term 'townhouse' was first coined in the 19th century when it was used to describe the town residence of someone whose primary home was in the country. Wealthy families would split their time between their two properties, moving with their staff from country to town and back again, according to the social season.

Traditional townhouses are terraced buildings, generally arranged over three or more floors. They may well have a balconet, or false balcony, on the first floor. Because they provide space in height rather than width, they are mostly found in cities where land comes at a premium, such as London, Bath and Edinburgh.

Although originating 200 years ago, these homes are just as desirable in the 21st century. Here are six of the best examples currently on the market.
