Leeds's credentials as a home for tech and digital business continues to grow

According to Tech Nation 2018, Leeds has the highest concentration of digital, data and technology innovators in the UK and the city currently has almost 35,000 digital technology jobs. The recent announcement that Channel 4 is to move its headquarters to Leeds is further string to the city’s bow.

Several initiatives are in place to encourage continued tech growth in Leeds. The digital economy is a key focus for both the Northern Powerhouse and the Leeds City Region. Bruntwood was awarded £2 million to establish a tech and digital hub at its new office development, Platform, which includes incubator space providing flexible workspace and business support services.

South of the river has become a popular location for start-up firms, in particular around the Holbeck area and towards Leeds Dock. Vastint is also bringing to life the former Tetley Brewery site. This will provide 850,000 sq ft of employment space which will include a dedicated capacity for creative industries and an additional 150,000 sq ft for retail, cultural, educational and leisure use.

It is about attracting the right talent to the city and Sky’s three-building tech hub at Leeds Dock, coupled with the Channel 4 move, is likely to  increase the pool of creative talent within the city. Being home to two national companies should help to create and sustain the environment of entrepreneurialism. Their physical location will also help a cluster of similar occupiers to form around them.

Channel 4’s arrival will also have a wider impact than just the HQ move. The channel works with a variety of production companies who are based in other UK regional cities. These firms will utilise existing creative and television production facilities in the city. True North Productions, based at Marshall Mills, has already expanded its footprint to 11,000 sq ft as it sees Channel 4’s move as a catalyst for future opportunities.
