Once de rigueur in wealthier households, the dressing room faded from fashion in the 20th century. But over the past decade or so the sartorial sanctuary has become à la mode again.
The revival of the dressing room is partly down to our increasingly busy lifestyles: a separate area for clothes and shoes makes it easier to find what we need in a hurry. And, of course, we all own more shoes, more shirts, more everything, than we did even just a few decades ago and we need somewhere to store it all. A dressing room is a luxury, certainly, but it can be a better use of space than a spare bedroom that is rarely used.
Today's dressing rooms vary in style from property to property. Some are reminiscent of a designer store, with open shelves and an island display for accessories; others are sleek wall-to-wall cupboards and drawers.
