Who doesn’t long for a garden filled with mature trees, a drive lined with horse chestnuts, or maybe even their own private wood? Perhaps it’s in our DNA since, as Owen Johnson points out in his fascinating Arboretum: A history of the trees grown in Britain and Ireland, no other country in the world plants trees for ornament with more enthusiasm than we do.

Our six selected properties feature not just familiar native species, but specimen trees, too, from Japanese cedar and black mulberry to liquid amber and gingko. One even boasts a yew tree certified as being at least 400 years old by botanist David Bellamy OBE.
