Be the president of your own White House

Whitehouse, Chandlers Cross, Hertfordshire

Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump – whoever wins the keys to the White House on 8 November, there's no doubt that they will be moving into a slice of American history.

Few properties are as iconic as the White House. According to the American Institute of Architects, it's the nation’s second most popular building, with the Empire State Building beating it to first place. Completed in 1800, it look eight years to build and has been home to every American president, with the exception of the first, George Washington.

According to his wife Nancy, President Ronald Reagan used to call the White House an 'eight-star hotel' while President Gerald R Ford once described it as 'the best public housing I've ever seen'. What would it be worth today? One speculative valuation earlier this year estimated its value at around US$389m, including contents. Other more reserved valuations put it at US$250m.

But of course the White House is not just a presidential home, it's also a national treasure with priceless works of art and furnishings attracting up to 100,000 visitors per month.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be an American president or even live in the US to have a White House address. Here are some worthy namesakes in the UK.
