Edinburgh's internet revolution to drive tech take-up

Gigabit cities

According to our latest What Workers Want survey (2016), office workers based in Edinburgh had the lowest level of satisfaction when it came to the quality of wireless technology in their office among UK workers. Only 38 per cent ranked it as satisfactory, below the UK average of 43 per cent.

However, this is all set to change. Fibre optic infrastructure developer and high speed internet provider CityFibre is expected to complete the installation of a 150km ultra fast fibre optic network in Edinburgh in September 2016, making Scotland’s capital the UK's largest "Gigabit City". Following the installation, Edinburgh will see internet speeds reach up to one gigabit per second (Gbps), which is around 100 times faster than the UK average and positioning the city at the forefront of tech innovation.

Since 2010, Tech and Media has been the most active sector in Edinburgh in terms of occupier take-up with over 1 million sq ft of office deals. This trend has continued in 2016 with 130,253 sq ft of space taken by Tech and Media occupiers in the Wider Edinburgh market in the first half of the year, including a 70,000 sq ft letting to CirrusLogic at Quartermile 4, 78 per cent above the long-term H1 average (73,000 sq ft).

With strong requirements in the market we expect this trend to continue and the arrival of high speed internet is likely to add to this. According to Oxford Economics, an additional 1,000 information and communication based jobs are forecast to be created over the next five years, representing growth of 6 per cent, above the UK average of 5.7 per cent.
