Johnny Rotten's Chelsea flat available to rent

Gunter Grove London SW10

As Punk turns 40 this year, Savills Chelsea has brought the former home of Sex Pistols' front man Johnny Rotten to the market.

Rotten lived in the Gunter Grove flat between 1978 and 1981 (marked by an unofficial Blue Plaque inside the property). It's close to the King's Road, a focal point for the Punk movement, and where Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren had their clothing store, SEX. McLaren, of course, went on to become the Sex Pistols' manager.

Available at a guide price of £1,295 per week, Rotten's flat is a modern split-level, three-bedroom period conversion, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light. Situated on the first, second and third floors, it offers access to a roof terrace with views across London.

The flat is likely to have broad appeal, from young professionals looking for a cool statement pad to single occupliers in search of space to entertain. And while many potential tenants won't have even been born when Rotten – real name John Lydon – was at the height of his fame, interest in the self-proclaimed King of Punk is still strong: the band’s old townhouse on Denmark Street, WC2, was recently awarded a rare Grade II* listed status, helped by Rotten’s graffiti and cartoon drawings that remain intact in the property.

Chelsea has long been one of London’s most fashionable locations. It was the heart of ‘swinging London’ in the 1960s and developed a reputation as a centre of bohemianism. Punk followed in the Seventies. Today the area is less rock ‘n’ roll, but with property on offer ranging from studio apartments and bijou mews houses to detached villas and grand townhouses, Chelsea continues to attract a diverse crowd: young, fashionable flat sharers, families with children, buyers and renters in the finance sector and an eclectic mix of international residents.

As for Johnny Rotten: he left Chelsea long ago and spends most of his time in Los Angeles these days
