For sale: The House at Pooh Corner

Cotchford Farm, East Sussex

This is Cotchford Farm, currently for sale through Savills at a guide price of £1.895 million. It's a pretty,16th-century house close to Ashdown Forest, but what is really special about it is that it was the childhood home of Christopher Robin Milne, aka Christopher Robin. The surrounding area – nick-named Pooh Country – was where a certain lovable bear and his friends had their adventures.

Milne's father, Pooh creator A A Milne, bought the property in 1924 as a country retreat for his family. It was an instant hit. Says Milne in his autobiography The Enchanted Places: 'Cotchford was different .. Cotchford was ours and on an Autumn morning we drove down to take possession. No, I have got it wrong. It was Cotchford that took possession of us'.

The Milnes owned Cotchford for more than 30 years and left several mementoes of their time here: there's a statue in the garden of Christopher Robin as a child, for example, and a sundial book initialled AAM with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eyeore, Rabbit and Owl carved into the surround.

The local landscape will also be familiar to Pooh afficionados: The 100 Acre Wood, Galleon’s Lap, Poohsticks Bridge and Pooh Corner itself were all based on real locations.

But Christopher Robin wasn't the only famous owner: in 1968 Cotchford was bought by Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones who, like A A Milne, intended to use it as a country retreat. Sadly, he didn't get the chance as he died the following year.

How often do buyers get the chance to purchase not just a delightful family home, but a slice of Britain's cultural history as well?
