Love London: Chiswick in a day

Chiswick in a day

Leafy Chiswick has everything: great places to eat and drink, open spaces, history, architecture, and plenty of retail opportunities. Here’s our guide to spending a day exploring the area.

9am

Start out from Turnham Green station (District line), turn left and walk along Turnham Green Terrace, stopping off to pick up a Monmouth coffee at Hack & Veldt. This small independent delicatessen gets quite busy in the mornings, but always offers an excellent browsing opportunity while you’re waiting for your coffee. Next, on to High Road House for a hearty, delicious Full English, or for a lighter option a Berry Berry Good smoothie – it’s a great place to watch the world go by.

10am

Time for some history and a walk to Chiswick House & Gardens, past the attractive Victorian and Edwardian architecture of the streets off the High Road. Chiswick House is a popular meeting and family location, where dogs can enjoy the open space. Built in 1729 by the third Earl of Burlington, the neo-Palladian villa is set in beautiful and historic gardens that are said to have influenced the landscaping of New York’s Central Park. There’s a modern café, incredible architecture and, if required, some culture and fun with the ‘Ten Things to See’ house tour.

12pm

Next a walk along the river to Fuller's Brewery, London’s last remaining family brewery, for a quick tour and maybe a pint of Pride. Then continue walking along the Thames, past the charming and exceptional Georgian and Regency houses of Chiswick Mall, through Dukes Meadows and Grove Park to Strand-on-the-Green: step back and admire the architecture – it’s a delightful, tranquil setting.

1pm

Time for a leisurely lunch at The Bull’s Head, a Grade II listed 18th-century pub, perfectly situated by the river and specialising in seasonal, traditional pub food. If the weather is good, sit on the riverbank and watch the river life pass by.

2.30pm

Then, head back to Chiswick High Road, via an optional nine holes of golf at Dukes Meadows, for some retail therapy. Home to every kind of shop you can think of and need, the High Road has a satisfying mix of boutiques, independents and well-known high street retailers. Don’t forget to check out some of the side streets for more boutiques and specialist shops (Devonshire Road). If, however, shopping isn’t your thing, Nikki’s Bakery is a great place to sit with a book and a cup of tea – the cakes are impressive, too.

5pm

Don’t miss the chance to wander through The Old Cinema to browse the antiques, retro and quirky furniture. And it’s certainly worth a stroll through Bedford Park, London’s first garden suburb designed by architect R J Norman Shaw, with beautiful family houses dating from 1875 and the impressive St Michael & All Angels Church, nestled in the middle of this sought-after conservation area.

6pm

To finish the day, have a G&T made with locally distilled Sipsmith Gin at Charlotte’s W4. Or try The Roebuck which serves locally brewed beers and has a garden.

8pm

Dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant: choose between La Trompette, serving modern British cuisine, and Hedone, which has a smaller, daily changing menu and a superb tasting menu. Whichever you choose, it's advisable to book.

10pm

To end the day, a nightcap and perhaps some music at Carvosso’s on Chiswick High Road.
