Wilmslow in a day

Wilmslow in a day

Famous for its high celebrity count and affluent lifestyle, Wilmslow is located within the much sought-after 'Cheshire Golden Triangle'. Here's how to spend a day in and around this gem of a town.

9am

Hop off the train at Wilmslow station (which has direct links to both London Euston and Manchester) and stop in at Rise for breakfast. If you’re feeling particularly famished, you can text ahead your order. Sit at one of this fashionable coffee shop’s outdoor tables and watch the world go by.

10am

Time for a spot of shopping on Wilmslow’s vibrant high street. Look out for the Art Deco shop front of Preston Diamonds and perhaps enjoy a spot of window shopping.

Treat yourself to a new outfit or fragrance, or do a spot of interiors shopping at Hoopers department store. Felling a little flush? Gents, if it’s designer labels you’re after, then menswear boutique Norton Barrie is definitely worth a visit. It’s frequented by wealthy businessmen and celebrities so you never know who you might bump in to. For ladies, Black White Denim boutique offers a whole host of designers to choose from.

11am

Walk off breakfast with a visit to The Carrs Park, a stone’s throw from the high street, where you can take a stroll along the River Bollin and the picturesque parkland. On the way, stop off and admire the view at the pretty Memorial Gardens, overlooked by St Bartholomew's Church.

Or, if you fancy unspoilt views across the Cheshire Plain, jump in a taxi and head out of town to Alderley Edge, two miles from Wilmslow. Here, you can discover the highest point on ‘the Edge’, which was originally a Bronze Age burial mound.

12.30pm

After all that fresh air, it’s time for lunch. One of the most popular restaurants in the area is The Clink in Styal woman’s prison. The Clink gets rave reviews and is only open for lunch so it’s essential to book.

2pm

It’s time for some history: two miles outside Wilmslow is Quarry Bank Mill, one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites with a working cotton mill. You can take a taxi from The Clink.

6pm

Time for a tipple and a bit of celebrity spotting at The Bubble Room at Alderley Edge. Try their Baby Pink Martini, or take a chance on the Monkey Brain.

8pm

After a busy day, how about a quiet country pub for dinner? The Bulls Head or The Church Inn at Mobberley, between Wilmslow and Alderley Edge, are both excellent. And in case you’re tempted to join the local pub quiz, it’s useful to know that the mountaineer George Mallory was born in Mobberley.

10pm

Before you head back to the station, check out the live music and a night cap at The Botanist in Alderley Edge. It has an amazing range of craft beers and ales and it would be rude not to try one.
