Edinburgh in a day

Edinburgh

Scotland's capital city exudes culture and elegance; there is plenty to keep the foodies happy too. Here's how to spend a day in Edinburgh. We challenge you not to fall in love.

9am

Hop on the tram from Edinburgh airport into the city and enjoy views en route of the iconic Murrayfield Stadium and the vibrant West End. Jump off at St Andrew Square and have breakfast at Valvona and Crolla’s VinCaffe on the luxurious Multrees Walk. While you're here, you might want to take a wander around Scotland’s only Harvey Nichols – don't miss the food hall on the fourth floor.

10am

Wander across St Andrew Square and down the hill, past Edinburgh’s famous Jenners department store and on to the Scott Monument. If views are your thing, walk up the 287 steps to the top where you can enjoy breathtaking scenery across Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside. Don't forget your camera.

National Galleries of Scotland

11am

Back on terra firma, head west to the National Galleries Scotland on the Mound. Spend a couple of hours enjoying some of Scotland's greatest art and, if time permits, stop for a coffee and pastry in the gallery café. Now it's time to tackle The Playfair Steps followed by the Writers steps which take you onto the Royal Mile. Turn right and stroll up to Edinburgh Castle’s Esplanade. If you're still here at 1pm you’ll hear the famous one o’clock gun loud and clear.

1pm

You’ll have worked up an appetite by now, so dive into one of the historic closes off the Royal Mile for some haggis, neeps and tatties at Whiski Rooms on North Bank Street. Afterwards, head down Advocate's Close for a whisky dram cocktail at the Devil's Advocate.

2.30pm

It’s time to get moving again. Continue down the Royal Mile to the Queen's official Edinburgh residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Opposite sits Scotland’s parliament building, designed by Enric Miralles, where one-hour guided tours are available free of charge. Above is Arthur’s Seat, a dormant volcano that offers gorgeous rural trails right in the heart of the city.

4pm

Take a short taxi ride to beautiful Stockbridge, a village-like neighbourhood where artists, musicians, poets and writers have long made their home. Mooch through the independent jewellers, vintage clothes stores, furniture and record shops, and if it's a Sunday, enjoy some locally sourced food and drink at Stockbridge market.

6pm

Have an aperitif or a local craft beer at one of the many cosy and stylish Stockbridge bars, or how about a bar hop? The Bon Vivant, Hamilton’s, Hectors and the recently reopened Raeburn (with heated outdoor seating) are all highly recommended.
