The new screen adaption of Far from the Madding Crowd opens this week, and the fact that several local locations were used in the movie – Sherborne, West Bay, Mapperton House and Forde Abbey all feature – is testament to how little the Dorset landscape has changed since Thomas Hardy wrote the novel, nearly 150 years ago.
