Gallery: Mews houses are London's hidden gems

Chesham Lodge, Chesham Mews, London SW1

A typical mews is a cobbled street with either two- or three-storey cottages, built in the late 1800s. The vast majority are in central London, though Bath and Edinburgh also have some notable examples.

Traditionally, mews were built in the streets behind the grand townhouses and served as stables, horse-drawn carriage storage and accommodation for the grooms. Many have now been transformed into light, open-plan spaces with all the modern conveniences, the ground-floor stables turned into garages – a world away from their original purpose.

An added advantage in London is that mews houses are generally located in the most desirable postcodes, and most are freehold.
