Henry VIII's recently discovered copy of Ruralia Commoda might be the oldest gardening manual in existence, but our love of gardening dates back long before the Tudors. Elements we think of as typically British –  lawns, clipped box hedges, roses, foxgloves – were all brought to our shores by the Romans.
