The first commemorative plaque was erected in London in 1867 by the Society of Arts. Today the original London scheme is led by English Heritage, while Historic England runs a national scheme, and local councils and heritage groups organise similar programmes across the UK.
A plaque helps a property stand out from its neighbours, though it’s difficult to suggest any value it might add – particularly as although it raises awareness of a building’s historical significance, it doesn’t offer any legal protection. However, they certainly add gravitas and charm.
