6 of the Best...Georgian homes

Creating grand country homes, sweeping crescents and elegant townhouses, the Georgian building boom has left us with a wealth of wonderful architecture inspired by antiquity. The Georgian period started with the reign of George I in 1714 and officially ended on the death of William IV in 1837. However, the term Georgian is often taken as roughly equivalent to the 18th century.

For the past two decades Savills has sponsored annual awards dedicated to the celebration and protection of this important and enduringly popular part of our heritage. The Georgian Awards are organised by the Georgian Group, which campaigns for the preservation of buildings and planned landscapes of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

This year’s winners will be announced tonight, 14 November, at the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the awards will be presented by John Goodall, architectural editor at Country Life.
